ChatGPT can do a lot, but it cannot replace your primary physician — at least not yet.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance and expand into various industries, including healthcare, the question of its reliability and effectiveness in the field remains.

Synopsis

In a recent experiment, a physician fed the history of present illness (HPI) notes of 35–40 patients into OpenAI’s ChatGPT and found that while the chatbot was able to suggest some common diagnoses, its accuracy was far from perfect.

Sample Misdiagnosis Results in Death

In the case of a 21-year-old female patient who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, ChatGPT suggested it was possibly an:

  • Appendicitis.
  • Ovarian cyst.

Results

These are among potential possibilities. In reality, the patient had an ectopic pregnancy, which is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment.
